Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Manual Lymphatic Drainage or MLD, is a very gentle manual treatment that improves the function of the lymphatic system throughout the body. It is a specific, light, skin-stretching massage technique based on the methods developed by Dr. Emil Vodder. MLD enhances lymph formation and promotes drainage within the superficial and deep lymphatic networks, helping to re-route lymph flow around blocked or “congested” areas and into healthy lymph vessels. It is a key component of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) for treating lymphedema, and is also effective for other conditions involving edema, such as post-surgical swelling and post-traumatic injuries.
MLD can help:
Reduce Swelling and Edema
Support Immune Function
Promote Stress Reduction and Relaxation
Support pre/post op procedures including cosmetic surgery
Promote Recover of accidents such as MVA, whiplash, falls, etc.
Chronic Pain management
Regulates Nervous System that may affect PTSD, anxiety, and insomnia
Reduce Headaches and Migraines
MLD Contraindications

These conditions must be strictly avoided when considering MLD:
Acute Infections: Any active infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi can worsen with MLD
Malignant Tumors: MLD may risk spreading cancer cells.
Thrombosis: Conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) pose a risk of embolism.
Untreated Congested Heart Failure (CHF): MLD can increase pressure in the veins, worsening heart conditions.
Severe Inflammation: Acute inflammatory conditions can lead to complications if treated with MLD.
-
These conditions require caution and may need medical consultation before proceeding with MLD:
Kidney Problems: MLD may not be effective and could overtax the kidneys.
Bronchial Asthma: MLD can potentially trigger an asthma attack.
Thyroid Issues: Treatment around the thyroid area should be approached with caution.
Pregnancy: Especially in the first trimester or if complications are present.
